Reflections from Patients Who’ve Walked With Me
Comfort in Crisis
“Karen made me feel calm during one of the most upsetting times of my life. She just knew — without me saying a word — when I was uncomfortable. Her presence brought comfort when nothing else could.”
One of my patients, herself a retired nurse, gave me this poem and told me I reminded her of what nursing is supposed to feel like. I carry that moment with me every day. It’s why I do this work to help caregivers reconnect to the heart they’ve always had, even when they’re running on empty. This is her quote next to the poem.
The Nurse’s Nurse
“Karen reminded me what being a real nurse feels like — heart, compassion, and presence. She was the kindest nurse I ever had.”
Feeling Heard
“Karen actually listened to me. She let me talk — really talk — and it was the first time I ever felt heard by a nurse. She treated me like a person, not a task.”
